So, I approached this as a Lovecraft fan and not a Holmes fan. While any collection of pastiche is likely to contain both hits and misses, this collection, with the clash of styles inherent in the theme, leans heavily towards the latter category. For nearly as long, the macabre tales ofH. Vaughn Sherlock Holmes and the Ancient Gods, etc. Three weak stories and excellent work in the Gaiman, Stableford, and Kiernan pieces. In this collection of all-new, all-original tales, twenty of today's most cutting-edge writers provide their answers to that burning question.

As for the rest, well, the less said the better, particularly as I quite like some of these writers when they are in their own element. Structured like a bad pulp-style adventure story, we have a villain attempting to poison London's water supply in a bid to turn the populace into pustule sprouting vegetables to appease the Old Ones. Watson witnesses a maniacal murder in London—and recognizes the villain as none other than his friend, Mr. All in all, I found the stories collected here a wonderful addition to the worlds of both Sherlock Holmes and H.

Wells join forces to protect a princess stalked by a ghost--or perhaps something far worse than a ghost. Sherlock Holmes. Lovecraft bleeds into the logical world of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's champion of rational deduction, in these stories by twenty top horror, mystery, fantasy, and science fiction writers. Holmes and Watson don't even get a mention in Elizabeth Bear's "Tiger!

Shadows over Baker Street by Michael Reaves Download PDF Ebook

For more than a hundred years, his adventures have stood as imperishable monuments to the ability of human reason to penetrate every mystery, solve every puzzle, and punish every crime. But what would happen if Conan Doyle's peerless detective and his allies were to find themselves faced with mysteries whose solutions lay not only beyond the grasp of logic, but of sanity itself.

Lovecraft have haunted readers with their nightmarish glimpses into realms of cosmic chaos and undying evil. Sherlock Holmes.

Shadows over Baker Street

As for the rest, well, the less said the better, particularly as I quite like some of these writers when they are in their own element. Sherlock Holmes. Be prepared to jump at shadows while you read this dark collection.

SHADOWS OVER BAKER STREET

As usual, when he puts his had to working in a classic fictional setting, Stableford delivers in a Shadows over Baker Street book effort which has the Diogenes Club investigating the death of one of its agents and trying to help a seaman suffering a Shadows over Baker Street book disease.

Given the high concept of mixing the distinctive worlds of two classic genre giants nicely captured in the pulpy jacket artthis one should succeed in the commercial Shadows over Baker Street book by virtue of curiosity value alone. He also picks up some inspiration for future stories along the way.

A story told via letter and hints of a horror from deep time - to say nothing of the lurking, nagging unease generated from a nearby shipwreck, this is another Kiernan story which uses the vitality of Lovecraft's themes without slavishly copying the plots and style.

All is explained in a disturbing ending. Geez, all that and I almost forgot: I second or third "A Study in Emerald"; I read 3 or 4 stories after that, all sort of the same, and never did go back. This means no less than a basic confrontation between reason and horror, logic and illogic, the taciturn and the unspeakable, forensic Shadows over Baker Street book and occult practice, and last of all, guns and tentacles.

Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is among the most famous literary figures of all time. Watson witnesses a maniacal murder in London—and recognizes the villain as none other than his friend, Mr.

Tangential trivia, Frank Finlay plays Lestrade in both movies, which were made 14 years apart. Brite and David Ferguson: A girl who has not eaten in more than three years teaches Holmes and Watson that sometimes the impossiblecannotbe eliminated. The frequency of Afghanistan being represented in some of these tales as a place where evil dwells, or hosting access to demonic dimensions, speaks eloquently of current events and world feeling.

Brite and David Ferguson: A girl who has not eaten in more than three years teaches Holmes and Watson that sometimes the impossible cannot be eliminated. Holmes appears arrogant, smarmy and sensually aroused by the intelligence and appearance of the lady.

An enjoyment well remembered. In this collection of all-new, all-original tales, twenty of today's most cutting edge writers provide their answers to that burning question. This one is authorized by his estate. As a result, Holmes is rarely a recognizable Holmes and the Lovecraft elements fall flat and we are left with stories that are neither fish nor fowl, but an unpalatable blend of the two.

Lovecraft, on the other hand, tended towards more roundabout prose, peppered with archaic and pseudo-archaic language and forms, which said more about atmosphere and a creeping sense of indefinable dread than character. Sherlock Holmes.

It was yet another example of that author's nostalgic Victorianism. Neil Gaiman, Simon Clark, and Poppy Z Brite are all far better writers than their entries in this collection would have you believe. Just as good are Richard A.

Review by Tim Pratt ().Jun 02,  · What is the opinion regarding Shadows over Baker Street? I'm a fan of both the Holmes stories and Lovecraft's work. Would it be worth my while to get this or would I be cringing at the unholy union?
